Rethinking AI in the Workplace

Rethinking AI in the Workplace - Consultant survey on Artificial Intelligence insights

In today’s business world, artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere. From automating customer support to optimizing supply chains, organizations across industries are integrating AI to transform workflows and ease the burden of repetitive tasks. However, alongside the enthusiasm for AI’s potential, there are lingering concerns about job security and questions about AI’s true impact on productivity and workplace efficiency. As companies face pressure to adopt AI swiftly, some view this as a chance to streamline and optimize, while others worry about the implications of AI on the workforce and the human skills that power businesses.

At CyberPro Consulting, we set out to better understand the impact of AI on the South African IT industry by surveying our own consultants. With clients across sectors like Banking, Insurance, Retail, Health, and Education, our consultants are embedded in diverse work environments, providing a unique perspective on AI’s role in the industry. Here’s what we discovered.

The Role of AI Tools in the IT Workplace

Our survey reveals that AI has quickly become an integral tool for IT consultants. Around 80% of respondents report using AI daily in their work, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT being the most popular tool (at 73% of the consultants using AI). Many are pairing AI tools to increase productivity, with ChatGPT and Copilot as the most commonly used combination. Notably, 67% of the clients where our consultants work actively encourage AI adoption, underscoring the growing industry acceptance of AI.

Productivity Gains from AI

One of the prevailing theories is that AI is enhancing productivity by taking on repetitive or time-consuming tasks, freeing employees to focus on higher-level responsibilities. We wanted to know if this theory matched our consultants’ experiences. Interestingly, while AI was expected to drive significant productivity gains, 35% of consultants reported little to no productivity improvements. The detailed breakdown is as follows:

  • 35% reported “not applicable,” suggesting that AI doesn’t impact their roles.
  • 21% cited productivity gains of up to 20%.
  • The remaining responses were evenly spread, with only a small fraction (1%) experiencing productivity increases of 91-100%.

These findings highlight a nuanced picture; while AI tools are helpful, their benefits may not be as universal or impactful for everyone.

Perceptions on Job Replacement by AI

Job displacement is a common worry in discussions around AI. However, among our consultants, the sentiment on this issue was relatively positive. Forty percent of respondents believe their roles won’t be replaced by AI, indicating a sense of job security within the IT sector. Breaking down the results further:

  • 40% feel their jobs will not be affected by AI.
  • 13% believe only around 20% of their work might be automated.
  • 11% estimate around 40% could be automated.
  • Only a minimal number feels their entire role could be replaced by AI.

This cautious optimism reflects the unique demands of IT roles that often require a human touch, creative problem-solving, and adaptability that AI, at least currently, cannot replicate.

Staying Relevant in the Age of AI

With the rapid advancement of AI, adaptability and continuous learning are essential. When asked if they felt confident in their ability to upskill to remain relevant, 57% of consultants agreed they could acquire new skills to adapt to AI-driven changes. This positive response is reassuring, as it demonstrates a readiness to evolve alongside technology and highlights the importance of a growth mindset in today’s digital landscape.
